Google keyword tool has let me down

I dunno what to do guys. Basically I did an article for a 3 word phrase that according to Google's keyword tool, has 12000 searches a month.

I've been building links to this article and I am on the bottom of page 1. However, on webmaster last month, it says my impressions for this search phrase have only been 300 and I've hardly received any visitors.

The weird thing is, it's a phrase I think people would actually search for a lot.

Not sure whether to keep building links to this article or to give up on it. I'm worried if I don't and people start searching for it again, I'll still be at the bottom of page 1.

Don't want to waste my time as well if people aren't searching for this phrase anymore. Sigh.

Do a PPC campaign for it and see if impressions match.

    +1 for this approach.

Were you at the bottom of page 1 last month? Or were you at a lower position? This article on SERP click through data may be of interest to you.

As always, you also have to check for Google Trends and Insights.

    Okay here's the thing.

#9 and #10 spots on Google are expected to get a minor 1% clicks of the total searches. Also, it should be noted that the Google Keyword Tool data is highly based on estimates, and does not provide accurate numbers.

For my convenience, I usually go for high search volume keywords, and then aim for #1 spot, that gets 40%+ clicks.

are you sure you got a constant volume of searches for that phrase? it can be that you picked one where it was trending for only a few months and now has decreased a lot?
