How Often are G's Page Ranks updated?

My site is relatively new (the domain is about a year or so old) and I've been doing fairly well in getting my articles indexed and ranked. I'm at PR 0, which makes sense, but I'm wondering when G updates PRs? I'm sure it's one of G's grand mysteries, but I'm wondering what your experience has been as far as how often your PR has changed? Is it common for a PR to go down after it's gone up?

PageRank is actually calculated on an ongoing basis. Global PR update
    is done every few months.

PR0 is actually an increase from PR n/a. You may actually be
very close to PR1, or higher.

Your PR is calculated from the number of backlinks and their quality.

If you find that you do have some decent high PR backlinks, that
are found, your PR will increase.

If you have a site that has good backlinks, you continue to build,
or people are linking to you, it is easy to go up to PR4. IMHO, after
that, it is a little more dicey. Now you really need to be getting
links in droves, or least more higher PR links. That's why PR0-4 is
common, PR5 -PR6 takes very hard work--a lot of link bait, PR7-PR8
is darn near impossible for the average Joe. All of my sites are
PR4-PR5. Looking for the elusive PR6 eventually.

Since PR is calculated using the number of backlinks, there are many
PR estimators on the web, but most are for entertainment purposes only.

Okay, that's good - movin' on up, so to speak. I think my backlinks are my number one problem - I just suck at finding dofollow links in my genre. Plus, I tend to spend my time writing rather than working backlinks - that's how I roll! I guess that's useless though if my articles aren't all hitting page 1 for my keywords (a few are). Okay - I'll work on backlinks - let you know how it goes. Suggestions on how to find them specific to gardening/farming would be great - right now it seems hit and miss. I do have a program that tells me if links are nofollow, but I can also check the code if I need to.

Google PR is updated after every three months.

Regarding your domain PR, I had the same issue with my site but then I realized that I wasn't doing enough link building (quality link building ofcourse). And once I started it, I got directly PR 2 within the first year of my domain registration.

So the base of getting increased PR is to get links from:

    - Authority sites
    - Relevant sites (relevant to your main category or niche)
    - And obviously linking to high PR sites

    Good luck

PR is not updated every 3 months. It's updated whenever google
      feels necessary to do it.

You need to start your own empire of sites. Free sites, that is.
Squidoo is a wonderful resource. Make a squidoo page on your
topic, and every sub topic you can think of. Link to your main
page. Start a blogspot blog. Easy to integrate adsense and the
power of google is behind you.

Find forums that are for farming, gardening, and think outside the box.
Like sub-genres: organic food, cooking, etc. anything that would appeal
to your niche. Find blogs in your niche.

Pretty soon, you have people linking to you.

But the best place to start getting links is on your own sites. One of
      the best kept secrets.

If you have some cash, there are backlinking services here that are
      offered.

If you don't have a twitter account attached to each domain, get one.
Start following all who follow back, and then people who are like you.
Twitter for me rocks as far as link bait.

Okay, I have an Organic Farm and Garden Squidoo Lens. In my articles there, I've been linking specific articles on my site. Should I just be linking the main page using targeted anchor text? I do have a Twitter account (~68 followers so far) and a FB Fan Page that only has like 27 fans. I'll open a blogspot blog for sure - what about WP.com? No cash at the moment, but I'm willing to do the leg-work - just need to find good backlink spots. Are blogs the best place to start?
