Creating a website sitemap...

Could anyone talk me through how to create a sitemap on my website? I have never done this before so I'm not even sure where to start. Please note that the website I intend to add the sitemap to is an online shop (don't know if this makes any difference to the way it is done). Also, the shop is not indexed by google yet (still to be launched), just thought I would say in case anyone mentions this.

    If you have wordpress installed, you can download the xml sitemap plugin. If not, then go to xml-sitemaps.com and follow the on screen directions.

      I use the xml sitemap plugin. But then again, most of my sites are WP based for SEO reasons.

        I have wordpress installed but it is a sub domain blog for my online shop. I guess I would need to do the xml sitemap view their website?

    OP: to get a useful answer you should clarify whether it's an xml sitemap for search engines or a human readable (html) sitemap that you want?

      Thank you for your input, because it is an online shop I would probably be better with a human readable sitemap. Would this be done differently to the xml sitemaps? Sorry if that is a daft question, I don't have the first clue about how to make a sitemap.

    if you are not using wordpress then use Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps Generator to generate sitemaps, I like the stuff and it also has auto updates online most other ones.
