How long for your first #1 ranking in Google?

I have a question for those of you who have sites in that coveted #1 ranking on Google. I'm curious how long it took you to achieve your first #1 ranking in the SERPs that earned you money (Obviously any of us could search for "www.mydomain.com" and be #1 but that's pretty worthless so just the ones that actually earned money).

Obviously I know that I can't assume everyone's story will be the same. I'm just curious to hear people's stories.

As for me, I don't have any ranking #1 for my targeted keywords yet. I do have a few sites that are making me a small amount of money (not much at this point but I expect it to continue climbing). Only one of them has been relatively consistent in it's earnings at this point, and I hope to get it to a #1 ranking for it's main keyword by the end of the month. I've had it up to #2, but it is sitting at #5 right now and I'm hoping that with some extra attention I can not only bump it back up to #2 but push it on up the rest of the way.

If I accomplish that, it will have taken 3-4 months from the time I started SEO/IM with a tight budget and far too little time.

For most of my sites, it doesn't take much to get to the top 3, usually within 2 weeks, depending on my linking plan. Then after that it takes a few weeks to get to grab the number 1 spot. I usually go for low comp, yet still profitable terms.

Well, it depends on your keywords. It is easy to bring your site to #1 position for non-competitive keywords but as you mentioned it is worthless.

Also, it depends upon the links that are you obtaining, high relevant links ( with your keywords as anchor text ) will certainly brings you at the top within short period.

It still boils down in your keywords. You will have to consider the following in order:
    1. Competition
    2. Profitability
    3. Backlinking plan

Still working on it, my friend. I'm on the first page for a number of keywords, but still haven't hit that top spot. Eventually!

When you got rank in first 5 in SE.Then next most important work is to do competitors analysis.Try to know first 4 sites backlinks. Then try to create backlinks for your website as harder to them as quality wise.If you ll use proper methods in your link building work then you ll really get some good results ASAP.

Thanks for the input. I think I've got a pretty good idea of what it will take to get my site the rest of the way up for that one particular keyword - though I obviously haven't done it yet so I could be wrong.

Either way, I really just like hearing other people's stories and how they progressed when they were new like me.

I've got an add-on to the original question:

What percentage of the sites you set out to achieve the top position actually get there? Of course, everyone wants to get to #1 for a money search term, but it doesn't always happen.

I can't give an exact number myself but in looking back at sites that have at least a few months on them, I can say we're under 50%...probably not by too much...but our "money" words aren't huge money makers either.

Not sure about #1, but almost every site I go after reaches the top 5 atleast. I make batches of 15-25 sites at once. When a batch has been made, I start making the next batch, but I don't make a new batch until 70-80% of my first batch has ranked in the top 5. Usually takes me 3-4 weeks per batch. Sometimes some sites just straggle in the rankings and need more time, so I just move on to my next batch and eventually those stragglers start ranking as well. I have a scheduled backlinking plan for all my sites, and then another plan for maintaining rankings once they are ranked. Consistency and diversity of links are essential for ranking consistently.

Jacked - I like your "batching" method...that seems pretty smart. I've seen people before say something like "All of my sites go to #1" and when asked how many they have it's like 4 or 5 sites, heh. With volume, we simply accept the fact that not all are going to go to #1 or be winners.

Our success rate is a little low...around 80-85% after 45 days or so to get to the first page...but a good portion of those are top 3. It's a real balance between when to plug away at new sites (volume) and when to spend a bit more time getting your recent sites to rank (efficiency).
