I was analyzing the ranking of my website and comparing it with one of my competitor. On almost all the keywords we are above or below one rank from our competitor but on one keyword he is on first page but we are on 3rd.
Reason? The title of his site which you will see in the search results is exactly the keyword while the title of the site is different.

Suppose the title of the website is Brand new and used motorcycles.
On every keyword you search you will see this title in all the search results but when you will search from the keyword "Cheap motorcycles" you will see the title "Cheap Motorcycles". Is this possible? I am sure they are using some black hat...

Google may change things. Like your title.

They want to give the searcher pages they think you want.
In your example, used and cheap are related.

Google may not use your title at all, or description.

Depending on your search terms, they reserve the right to
      show relevant, useful titles.

Here's the kicker for you. If you have the same title across the
board, on every page, that case is more ripe for google changing
      it.

Been really working on titles/descriptions etc the past few days. On one of my pages google is using my first few lines of text on the page instead of my WP description. I just today noticed this Pretty lame of me not to see this. So now I need to look at my on page content/text and see what I can do.

It can be tough trying got figure out what works and what is going to show up sometimes. When I think I should be ranking some page for a certain keyword a different page ranks for that keyword. Can be very frustrating fo sho. I am in the midst of finding out what works and experimenting a bit.

Also been paying way more attention to my competitions descriptions and titles. Although important its not just all about links
