How Many Monthly Unique Visitors = Success?

I'm just shy of 1k visitors this month, which is a bit astonishing to me, since the site is fairly new. I know this isn't an insane amount of people, but as a writer, I get kinda giddy knowing that a thousand people have read what I have to say. (Well, except those stinkin' bouncers!). Maybe visitors isn't a way to measure success since there's not a lot of money to be made unless said visitors are actually clicking something or buying something.

Without divulging sites or income, how many visitors do your sites get on average? Is 1K in a month good for a startup site? My income is nil, but yesterday I had two clicks and an Amazon sale (my best day yet), so I'm optimistic that if I continue working at it, I'll manage to increase that. (Okay, I'm frustrated, but still optimistic!)

Love to hear success stories, so post away!

i think the answer is a combination of the quality of the traffic + the conversion rate once they arrive at your site. make sure you analyze your traffic (what keywords brought them there, the bounce rate, conversions, etc.). tweak your content and ad placement, etc. to see if you can improve your conversion rate. add more backlinks to your good keywords to get higher rankings (traffic). good luck!

I agree on this post.. both quality of the traffic and conversion are the keys.

I've got this site, which is creeping toward 3k / month unique visitors: Shooters' Journal | For the new generation of gun owners.. I run it with some friends.

It's rather poorly monetized with Amazon stuff, and we aren't focusing on making $$ with it right now. We make about $10 / month on Amazon commissions as it is. We're more interested in building authority and a community first, and plan to sell ads directly eventually, along with launch a couple of our own products.

1000 visitors a month is good for a new site.

Since you've mentioned Amazon, I assume you don't sell your own products.
If the site is the one on your signature, you need to experiment more with Adsense ad placement, colors etc. About $40/month is realistic with Adsense.

I don't sell my own products as yet, but I'd like to put together an e-book of organic gardening stuff to sell on the site. The Amazon links are mostly hyperlinked text in articles, but also some photo ads on more product-driven articles. I do have to change up my ad format to blend into my site better. Working on that today.

I've been paying close attention to keywords and bounce rates. MOST of my traffic comes from Google, I have about 5 articles on Page 1. My bounce rate is high, but it's been suggested that may have been from a problem I had on my sidebar (it's fixed now).

1000 is a pretty good number for a new site. You see, many people have to through months to achieve their first $100 on Google Adsense, and you already got your first sale on Amazon just base on this number, so you're doing very good! My suggestion is try to change your ads' layout, it may make your earning better.

One of my website is hitting 7k Uvs a day with around 500k + impressions a month. But still I only make around 30$ a day from adsense. Thats sucks doesn't it?

Fail or success all depends on your niche IMO. I have experienced it, and with the kind of traffic I get, if I had a health or insurance website I would be minting around 5k-10k a month very very easily..

Um yeah, that sucks...(ahem). I have made about $1.50 in the last two days and those were the first two days that I made something two days in a row! I made my first Amazon sale and got a few clicks on ads. My topic probably isn't as lucrative as yours since gardening isn't as high dollar a genre as others. But it'd still be nice to earn $10 a day for me. That'd pay my rent!

My main keyword is not something I'm going to rank for anytime soon. "Organic Gardening" is super competitive, but what I AM working on is making my articles all very keyword specific in related topics. THOSE are ranking for their keywords. I figure if I can get those ranked, maybe it will increase my "authority" overall?

I just visited your website (the one in your signature ) and impressed with the site. You can use one more adsense block some where near right hand top position.

About 1K visits per month means good for a startup site (though domain age is one year). Keep adding more articles and create more backlinks. you will get more traffic to your website.

This is kind off topic, but I have found that in many cases, driving up your UV count is simply a matter of continuously adding unique content and just "sticking with it".

I have canned so many websites before they even had a chance to go anywhere...

My conversion rate does suck. I already have three adsense ads on the pages, so I can't add any more. I just put the one in my sidebar and within 24 hours got my first click. Thanks to a Warrior for that advice. I've been pretty fastidious about putting new content up every other day, so I'm averaging 3-4 articles a week. I've got 39 unique posts so far. Since it's gardening season, I'm trying to ramp up my posts. I'm also going to work into Fall and Winter gardening so my visitors don't plummet over the winter (hopefully international visitors will still keep things going with their opposite seasons).

I just visited your website (the one in your signature ) and impressed with the site.
Thanks so much - this site is my baby and I have worked really hard on it!

    Your ads aren't clearly visible.
    1. Try increasing the ad unit sizes.
    2. Test with disabling image ads. (I'm seeing image ads about 'phone systems')
    3. Try disabling interest based ads.

If you haven't done already, link your Analytics and AdSense accounts. Then you can find out which websites/keywords bring you the highest payout visitors.

Help me understand what "clearly visible" means. I have one at the top (which I agree seems to be more interest based rather than pertinent to the topic on the page), a link ad under the 1st paragraph and one that is low down on the page, but actually got me a click (those have been few and far between) the day after I put it there on another Warrior's recommend.

Should I only do text ads then? But not link ads at the top of the page?

I'm not sure my template will allow for larger ads. I tried doing a link ad (square) and it jacked up my sidebar and article text. I can't go wider on the banner ads and the sidebar is limited in size as well. Help me out here - I'm not sure how I can follow your suggestions!

How Many Monthly Unique Visitors = Success?
I'm sure somebody else has mentioned this already,

It's not about numbers, it's about results.

Now that you have a consistent stream of traffic you can start tuning your ads and site to improve your results.

I think it depends on "succes" which you mean..If you want to earn $100 a day i think you need 100.000 visitor a day..That's my opinion..

    1k visitors are good.

    Keep up the good job.

    But...

    Are they targetted traffic?

Targetted traffic = someone searches for chicken coup and they find a chicken coup page on your site. Targetted traffic converts highly (higher AdSense CTR and Amazon sales)

Less targetted traffic = long tails. Not so good for conversion.

    e.g.

    How do I know?

    From experience.

I have sites which have over 100 pages, an authority in its own rights.
Mind you, these are not standard 400-word articles. These are LSIed and high quality articles that range between 600 - 1200 words, some even 2000 words long. But I didn't mind because it's a hobby site, cycling.

But, there are NO backlinks done to the site. If there are, very few.

    Results?

The site has a bounce rate of 88% (pretty high, which is not good at all) according to Google Analytics. In other words, less targetted traffic.

100% of the results came from long tails like

    "stoker chainring wear"
"bike jersey" + "how to buy"
    "stoker chainring wear"
    plastic bikes for toddlers
is a tandem faster than a road bike
gearing for single speed mountain bike
age of use for tag-along bikes
    - and the list goes on for 380 long tails like similar to the earlier ones

Visitor count matters very little. Depends on your conversion rate and if there is $ in the niche you are in.

I don't really think there's a secret formula. I have a site that gets 50,000 uniques a month and only makes about $30 a month. I have another site that only gets 1,000 uniques a month and makes $150 a month.

1,000 is good for a new site if you have a high conversation rate and it depends on many factors. Your competitors and the content of your website. Also you should know that usually people buy from known websites even if its an Amazon product and they go to Amazon for paying it.
