Normally Breadcrumb navigation is use to guide the user regarding the path that they traveling in the site.

For example, if you are maintaining the e-commerce website where you need to display all parts/products of particular brand,

    Home >> Brand 1 >> parts >> sub parts >> etc

You can provide the above navigational path which will help the users to navigate easily.

Breadcrumb is mainly useful for user, to visit inner page and it helps to tell someone that path, to find that particular page. Also helps to revisit and suppose to go back to visit a page again between that pages.

I haven't heard this term, but as others have said, the breadcrumbs really are for the USER.

What we have done is optimize the landing pages along the way to be very search optimized. Example breadcrumb:

Home > Rental Homes > United States > Florida

And then each page in there has optimized titles/meta tags/etc:
    - "Rental Home Listings"
    - "Rental Homes in the United States"
    - "Florida Rental Homes"

The example is fictitious but hopefully you get the idea. Breadcrumbs = short/snappy for your user. Overall landing page = opportunity for specific rankings.
