Ranking a generic single term keyword is very tough. Also, it depends upon your keyword competitiveness too. In-order to bring the single term keyword top, your URL should be your exact single tern keyword and you need to obtain more backlinks from authority, relevant sites with your keyword as a anchor text.

I agree with tessa, it depends on what is your keyword, you should target a keyword that has low competition to rank faster and also used internet marketing strategies like forum posting, article writing and social media marketing

Normally, single-term keywords are not specific. People who query single-term keyword are always not buyers. Plus, single-term keywords are too competitive. So, it's not advisable to invest time and effort to rank for single-term keyword unless it's your brand name...

Ranking high for single word according to it's daily searches is very difficult. The technique is the same as optimizing for a term. You should make backlinks for your desired site with that single keyword. But if the keyword you want to promote for is high competitive, i suggest you to ignore it and start working on a medium competitive keyword.

It doesn't have to be that hard. Just write an good article and use your keyword in the title. Then just backlink like hell ! Use blog commenting, post articles to different article directories etc. It will take some time but rome wasn't built in óne day...

Single word which is very common is really difficult to rank unless you spend thousands of dollars on link building.
