Direct-linking vs Tier'd Linking (Like Pyramids)

I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered (I'm sure it has somewhere on the WF), but I'm just curious to get the opinions of the great minds of my WF brethren (and sisteren... new word really).

I'll use the word "we" alot... and I'm using it as a general term... you may not agree, and that's GREAT... this is why I'd like to get everyone's opinion. So please add your comments to the subject.

We hear alot that "the more links-the better"... we even base our competitors purely on the number of backlinks they have to the ranking page.

Then... you hear link-builders talking about how well tier'd link-building works... link pyramids and link-magnets have been all the rage in the last couple years because of all of the "link juice" that's being passed up the pyramid to the money site.

So I ask... which is better for ranking? Direct linking? The more links-the better?

Or the Link Pyramid? BTW... you can get some very complex pyramid ideas by doing a google, yahoo, or Bing "Image" search for "link pyramid".

Thanks in advance,

DeShon (aka Droopy)

Best bet is to utilize both methods in my opinion. I think there are other variables involved which prevent me from answering your question. For example, which sites in particular the links are obtained and which sites are used in the tiered linking...

    Hi DeShon,

While that seems like a simple question, "which is better direct linking or pyramid linking?" The answer is not so simple. With all other factors being equal, direct linking is better. However, all other factors are never equal.

In a perfect world we all get natural organic backlinks without having to create them ourselves. Since we don't live in a perfect world we generally go out and get (at least a few) self created backlinks to ensure that we are able to be found by search engines. Since those self created backlinks need backlinks to ensure they will be found, we sometimes need to create a second tier of backlinks pointing towards our first tier of backlinks. This leads to the eventual pyramid like structure of backlink building campaigns.

If we get all of our first tier backlinks from pages that are being promoted by others then we do not need a second tier. Likewise, those same backlinks, because they are being promoted by others, will multiply the results of our own efforts. Therefore, direct linking when done this way is definitely more powerful, yet it relies on the generosity of others.

In the end it really depends on your ability to capitalize on the value of your content through social skills, otherwise your effectiveness wanes to the point that pyramid campaigns are your more effective method. If you have useful content, and can leverage that content with effective social skills, direct linking is way more powerful. However if you have poor or otherwise ineffective social skills and/or useless content, then pyramid link building may be your only effective option.
