Umm... to get better rankings? To rank for a broader set of keywords? To rank for a specific keyword? To obtain more traffic through long-tail searches? To get more traffic to your site?

Simple answers, but vary depending on your site's goals.

You can have an awesome website with great content but if you don't have any backlinks pointing back to your site you will not get good rankings...

Backlinking is the most important thing in SEO if you ask me.

The purpose of seo is optimizing a website for some keywords that they rank high in search engines when someone searches for them. In this case that searcher visits this website and webmaster of that website can sale his products or services.

The purpose of SEO is to get TRAFFIC. Rank is meaningless without traffic.

If a #1 rank is all you're after, make up a word never used by anyone else, optimize your page for that word, get a couple of links to that page and you'll be #1. Traffic is a different matter...
