I'm looking for some insight/help here...

I've been running Adwords for a year and doing fine. Last week I was looking at my analytics and noticing a LOT of traffic coming in from keywords I wasn't using.

For example, using the broad/phrase and exact for "Sales Help".

I started getting "insurance sales techniques" type phrases.

My understanding (and past experience on different campaigns) was that even on the broad match - the both words needed to be in there somewhere.

I started typing in Google searches and discovered that Google was running my ad under the way broad word of "Sales"... No "help" anywhere in there.

Did they change their policy? Has this been the way it always is and I missed it? Can they take any word out of a broad phrase and just throw your ad up on it - regardless of the phrase in your keyword list?

Any insight you can give is greatly appreciated - thanks!

    Hi Trebor_Revo,

Say hello to "Extended Broad Match".

AdWords has been doing this for some time now. Many people only use phrase and exact matching for this very reason. There is no way to turn Extended Match off and sometimes it does some very odd matching.

At the very least you need to constantly monitor your ad groups that contain broad match keywords and add lots of negative match keywords to keep it on track.

There is no definitive answer to preventing this problem other than keeping a close watch on the keywords people are using to find your site. Some of the keywords that broad match suggests can be so off topic it is funny.

Thanks guys - that answers it.

I haven't had extended broad match bring in that many wonky results that fast before.

Gonna have to turn it off - found it running my ad on "coupon sales". That's a world away in intent and meaning of "Sales help"
