I just commented on a blog. I checked to see if the link was nofollow, and there is the nofollow tag on the page but its not betweem the <a href=></a> for my link. Does that mean that my link is dofollow? thanks for the help.

yes. nofollow must be attributed to each specific link

Try the firefox plug in NodoFollow. I click on that tool and it highlights no follows in red and dofollows in blue in seconds. Takes a lot of the guess work out of it and frees up some of your time.

Was it a meta tag? with CONTENT="NOFOLLOW"
If so, it does not matter what the individual link says. Most likely the google
bot will ignore all links. Whatever "ignore" means.

Easy way of making all links nofollow.

Actually a pretty good question that I've never seen anyone bring
      up before here.

I'd grab a Firefox or Chrome dofollow / nofollow plugin and let it run while you're posting. Easiest way to determine if your links are dofollow or not.

The question would be, does the firefox plugin detect link level nofollow
only, or do they see the meta content="nofollow" and make all links
on the page appear nofollow? I'm under the impression that a global
page nofollow will not make individual links appear as nofollow. Hence,
the plugin would be useless. I'm too lazy to find an example and try
      it.

        HEY OP!!!! GUESS WHAT!!?!!

        Who cares if it's NoDoFollow...

It's counted as a backlink no matter what... Backlinks are backlinks are backlinks.

        DoFollow juice down PR... Supposedly.

        But come on...

I agree with you scott g. However dofollow backlinks are more important than nofollow ones, but still nofollow backlinks help to get better ranking on search engines.

It's a well known FACT that NoDoFollow backlinks are NORMAL. If you have all DoFollow.... That's just messed up and NOT normal.

You get PR juice from DoFollow links... You can find millions of PR HIGH DoFollow pages... But you're never going to get links on those pages... BUT you do get lucky sometimes...

I think PR juice is a joke personally. So I look at backlinks are backlinks are backlinks are backlinks.

Anchor text in your hyperlink does matter though...

If you think NoFollow backlinks are crap, create a Google Webmaster and create a bunch of NoFollow links WITH anchor text... And learn....

      CHEERS!

DO follow links are only important when you are after link juice, but as for backlinks are concerned, backlinks with no follow still count as a backlink to your website, just no Link Juice(PR juice).

By default, a lot of websites especially using the wordpress platform are no follow, but this can be edited if the webmaster wants the links on his site as do-follow links.
