I recently purchase a new website with a forum, and would like to know best way to get traffic and registered users. Do you recommend outsourcing fake posters to generate buzz, and purchasing traffic (once the site is indexed) or simply use organic, link building strategies. Please advise

You need to promote a forum in much the same way you promote a website. The key to building a successful forum is to ensure the site is populated with up to date discussions. Even if that means you have to create the different accounts and make the posts to create the illusion of popularity.

PPC is probably quite an expensive option for a start-up site.

Jumpstarting a forum isn't as difficult as you may think, but I'd say away from paid posters, especially since most of them will just paste in garbage that will do more harm than good.

I'd start by including a link to your new forum in the signature file of other boards that you are a part of (provided they allow that, some forums permit all advertising other than competing forums in the same niche). You could also consider running a few contests that won't cost you all that much but since people love the opportunity to win prizes, I've seen forums beefed up in only a few weeks just by offering affordable gifts/prizes like gift certs, merchandise, free products, etc. (you could create a trivia category, to initially get it going).

I'd avoid a "paid to post" module, or anything where the only way your forum members can win is by posting up a storm, you'll end up with nothing more than spam and a ton of work in 'clean up duty'.

Be careful to limit the number of categories on your forum as well, especially when you are just starting out. If I drop by a forum and it looks bare, I won't bother registering, so keep it trimmed down and post as much content as you can (relevant to the topic of your board). When your forum does kick off, you could consider requiring visitors to register to read posts/threads, but again, be careful doing this too soon or you'll lose out on all the lurkers who are just interested in browsing and getting to know your community .. they may eventually join and you don't want to force them out ahead of time.

Good luck with your board! =)

I would suggest if you have a blog to start promoting the forum there as well as mentioned above commenting on other forums or related blogs. It's going to be your basic traffic generation that you may have used in the past. I would make sure the forum stays active too as also mentioned above.

Any traffic efforts done make sure that you have completed keyword research so you know the keywords that are going to drive some traffic to you and that others are searching for but yet aren't so competitive that you become discouraged.

My number one source for targeted traffic is youtube. Over the past 18 months I have published 319 videos. These videos get around 10,000 - 15,000 combined views daily. This sends a steady stream of targeted traffic to my site.

The topic of your website would probably do well this this. A couple of weeks ago I got my step son into making war hammer online videos.

Then there is an automatic embedding media modification for VBulletin you could install.

Here is an example of what you can do. This is my sons gaming forum, its pointed towards Team Fortress. My step son is posting his videos in the other games section - Warhammer online keep take

I also opened my son a youtube account and started making team fortress videos for him. In the last 6 or 7 weeks I have published 30 something videos. As of right now, youtube is the 5th highest source of traffic to my sons site.

So I have my son and my step son making videos and posting them in the forum.
