How hard is it to rank?

Hi, does anyone has any experience in getting local businesses to first page google/yahoo/bing? Is it as hard as ranking the normal affiliate websites ?

    Like always, it depends on keywords.
    One thing is for sure, a lot of very competitive niches in regular Google search are not as competitive in Google places, or is that not what you are talking about?

    If you are talking about Restaurant X in Detroit and your keyword is 'Restaurants Detroit', then yes, it can be hard but if you are targeting a non competitive niche like a barbershop in a obscure city, then no it is not as hard.

    I was thinking of ranking a general business domain name for example brooklynpetcareservice.com and then call business owners and offer to list their pet care services company names in this website and charge them rental space.

    Ah yes that is a often used method.
    Like I said, it can be done and lucrative how ever it depends on your niche.
    If you are able to rank for 'restaurants [cityname]' and get great traffic, you could create nice revenue.
    But it is the same with every website, depends on your niche, keywords, competitors, expected and real traffic and so on.

    Local business websites should not be any different except for the fact that there are still a lot of niches that are not yet targeted by marketers.
