authority site question

I have a one year old blog that gets some traffic, that I am planning to revamp into an authority site. Back when I installed it I read somewhere that it would be better to have it as mydomain.com/blog so I did. I kept the mydomain.com unused (just threw a theme on it) and surprisingly the Alexa is the same as the blog's. Now I would like to clickbump the mydomain.com and either do away with the /blog or link to it in the menu but I am worried about without losing the ranking and the traffic from the blog. Should I do it, and if so, how?
