Help! Dancing too long

I've a product review site which a month ago had nearly 20 page 1 rankings for various terms and was averaging about $10/day.

Suddenly every page fell to between positions 500 and 900 in Google and they have remained there for almost a month.

It did dance before, maybe 7 to 10 days and always came back stronger.

The fall does not seem to coincide with any specific backlinking activity.

Do I let it be or intervene?

Any recommendations welcome.

I dont think there is really a great answer for this, but I personally would build a few higher pr links to the site and move on to something else. I would keep my eye on it and see if I could notice any changes. Chances are that since it dropped so low in the rankings it will come back.

I am currently dealing with this issue also. I hate it really, but I think the best thing to do is keep improving your website and keep building backlinks.

        Thank you guys,

There already seems to be a consensus developing, namely,

keep doing what you are doing and maybe throw in a few high PR links.

Okay, here is the only thing that concerns me about your post. You don't think it has anything to do with backlinking, have you not done backlinks in a while?

If that is the case, were you building them regularly, and then just stopped?

I have had EXACTLY the same happening to me, page 1 rankings steadily improving while dancing around, then suddenly a week ago, everything back to positions 500-600. I probably should have continued to backlink once I had those page 1 rankings. On the other hand, yahoo and bing keep showing improved rankings. I'm sure content wise i belong in a top spot, so very frustrating.

What can you tell me about your backlinking?

That was your problem. Never stop building backlinks, even with a #1 ranked site.

        iAmNameLess,

Sorry if my op was ambiguous wrt backlinking.

What I mean is, I didn't stop or alter my backlinking when I reached page 1

and there doesn't appear to be any correlation between the drop in rankings and any specific backlinking I was doing. (I didn't throw 10K links at any page just prior to the fall.)

        Hope that clarifies things.

        and rvdp,

I always try to be consistent and vary the nature of the links and pr. There are profiles, social b/marks, blog comments, articles, etc. The site is about 5 months old with nearly 700 links (according to yahoo.) A handful of pr 1,2,3, and 4 (maybe 12-15 each) and just a couple of pr5.

do you think it will appear back right away at its original position after new backlink building?
