I have a site that has been up a few months and is listed in the serps. I've decided to break it up into 3 different sites ( each more narrowly focused ) with 3 different domain names.

Do I leave the site up at the current domain name and take the sections to the new domains or would this hurt me in my search engine listings? Is this considered duplicate content?

Do I just put a doorway page there leading to the other sites?

Need some help. Thanks.

Are you ranking for any keywords for the first domain you are keeping? If so, keep that. Stand up the additional domains and then add content to them. If you make a bunch of changes to your first domain you will have to get crawled again and it may affect your SERP per keyword. All depends on how you optimized your page (each one).

I am getting some search results on the first site, but very little. But I still would like to get more narrowly focused.

I;ve never done a 301 redirect but I can learn how. You say "I don't recommend changing it". You mean don't change the site or the domain?

I think you should have a 301 redirect and you will be fine but i dont recommend changing it.
