How DO You get your websites on the first page?

Personally, the honest truth of MY EXPERIENCE of getting my websites to the top is first of all - adjusting the title tag to where I want to rank in my niche. Let's say I am selling blue beanie babies - I would set the title tag as <title>blue beanie babies | [second set of KWs]</title>
After that, I would put "Blue Beanie Babies" in as my regular title and (subtitles could be my seconday and third KWs) and then I would mention "Blue Beanie Babies" a few times in the body of my text. There would be other on-page SEO that I won't get into.
For the off-page - I would change up my anchor text...it could be "blue benie baby", "blue benie babies" "small blue benie babies" - something like that. Here is where my success has been though. I know a lot of you will hate it, but my backlinking has been from article marketing (EZA, articlebase, GoArticles, hubpages, squidoo etc). However, my main boost has been through an almost daiy posting of comments with backlinks going to my client's or my websites. AND they have been successful. I might leave a backlink here and there from Craigslist or some other type of website - but for the most part, it has been forums - both relevant and non-relevant.
So - for those who have been successful as well - what is the "secret" to your success? I like to get a thread going of success stories of how ppl got there website on front pages and/or more traffic.
