How To Confirm Keyword Is Really Getting Traffic?

Hi,

so I know there are a few things you can do. What I do is check the google keyword external tool and the seo book tool. If both show similar traffic numbers I feel good the keyword is getting the searches. Of course I set the keyword to exact match with the google tool. I also look to see if any websites that keep track of views are on the first page of Google. Like perhaps ezinearticles to see if there's been a large number of views like the tools show.

But sometimes I run into keywords that get good numbers on seo book keywords tool and google tool but later find out when I rank for it theres no traffic. Should I be cross checking my keyword with any other tools?

I just want to prevent this from happening in the future. The worst thing ever is to work for a month building backlinks only to find your keywords not getting any traffic when you get to the #1-3 spot on Google. Any tips guys on how to pick keywords that are really getting traffic? Thanks

Could simply have something to do with your title or description tag just not being attractive to people who are searching. Also depends on where you're ranking.

Thanks for asking this question - I'd like to hear some ideas about it too.

I've had a sneaking suspicion that some of the kwd/niches I've looked at with 1000 searches per month actually have 800 searches per month by internet marketers looking for keywords or checking their rankings.

Exactly, most of the keyword tools uses Google's data MarketSamurai, MicroNicheFider, NicheFider, etc., sometimes when your search query is to big using the software it triggers the captcha, which suggests that it is being counted in the searches. Also the numbers are a monthly average of the previous 12 months, not the previous month like the old keyword tool used to be. For instance "air conditioners" shows a high count in December, but if you check "insights" it shows a huge spike in the summer months skewing Decembers results.
