New Websites Hard to Get Ranked

Last year - I had a website (about 15 pages) that took about a year to get ranked on the first page and then I finally got the number one position.

I rolled out another site about three months ago and I was ranked around #280 and got it to #73 in my niche (it's modestly competitive). It's been there for about a month now. I've been backlinking and adding a lot of content to it (I have near 40 pages with 500 - 700 words per page (it is an informational website)).

My problem has always been patience. I just need someone to assure me (once again) that "infant" or new websites like mine do take a long time to get ranked. Am I correct about this? I know there are a lot of factors like how tough my competition is and all that...but generall speaking, should I be more patient in seeing this website rank?

  • absolutely, be patient more and more. if you can wait for a year to get no. 1 position then why should be in hurry?
my friend, competition is getting harder and harder day by day. as you can see you were doing all kind of SEO to get your site in first page of google, similarly many other guys are also inventing more new techniques to get their sites in first page.

so do not be dishearten and just hold your nerve and be patient. i think you have very good potential.

    best of luck.

Make sure you build quality links, that way you continue to be in the race, once you reach page 1, you'll have to maintain your link building quota, else you may face a ranking drop
(Your competitors do that, so should you :p)

Since your website has got ranked, sandbox won't be your problem. What you need to do is keep what you're doing now, contents building, link building, advertising, etc.

Well if you want to rank for very competitive 1 or 2 keywords it can take a year but is it worth it? I ranked my recent web site in 2-3 months with good link building techniques. I suggest to test keywords in pay per click first and only after that go to organic search, because you can waste a lot of money and time with 0 conversion. You must be in the 1 place if this place converts well. Getting a lot of traffic is nothing if you don’t make money.

To answer your question properly we need to know exact situation about competition and keywords. Now you are asking about air and we can answer nothing more than that.

Yup they need time to mature - and also you incoming links need time to mature to give you the most juice I've found!

I simply get them up, update them once per week, build links once per week and add to my weekly routine of stuff to do. You'll get there But I know, it's painful that they take so long to get going because #1 for the targetted keyword is sooooooo sweeeet!!!!

I'm afraid you either choose too competitive niches or there's something wrong with your ranking procedure, because I created a site in December, published one article and left it alone because of exams and then ranked for 2 keywords (position 3, 4 and 5 for one and position 2 for the other) within 2,5 months...

        Hi bigcat1967,

I think you may be looking at a the issue of ranking in SERPs all wrong.

Search engines do not rank websites, they rank individual web pages for individual keywords. Odds are you already have numerous first page rankings on those 40 pages that you have created. The problem is that you haven't gotten any of those individual pages to rank for the one keyword you are primarily targeting.

I would change your strategy slightly to include long tail keywords that include your primary keyword as a root. Select long tail keywords that have a bit of traffic but little competition. Those long tail keywords will be relatively easy to get onto the first SERP. This will not only give you targeted traffic, it goes a long way toward building authority for your primary targeted keyword.

Include a link to your homepage using your primary targeted keyword as the anchor text on each of those pages targeting the long tail keywords you are ranking well. As you build your homepage's authority for your primary keyword it will begin to rank higher in the SERP.

What I suggest is keep working and keep building more sites. By the time you finish a few more, your previous sites are already ranked. I build 50-60 sites/month and by the end of the month, several of the first sites I built that month are already ranking very well. Just takes patience and hard work.

Wow, thats a lot of sites. How many pages per site do you develop? As a percentage how many of them actually make money? Is backlinking to these not a nightmare?

    It takes time bigcat!

I've oftentimes wanted to just give in but you just have to keep at it and carry on. Keep building links, keep adding content on a regular basis (drip feed if necessary using wordpress) and try and use a 'reputable' backlinking service such as UAW (in my case) to automate the task of slowly building links.

Since your niche is moderately competitive, it will take a little longer than expected, with all the recent Algo changes by Google, its an uphill battle, but one that can be fought and won.

I agree with @dburk as well, pages are ranked not sites. Ensure that when you backlink, you target your homepage and an inner page for the target keyword so you can get maximum benefit to all pages.

Don't give up hope now my friend, we're all in the same boat! :-)

    Onwards and upwards!

Jacked, please answer nettech's question. I'm very interested to know how that works out for you. I've been considering assuming the same strategy, but it sort of takes a leap of faith, if you know what I mean. If that's working out for you, I may start something like that. Thanks.
