Backlink Relevancy - Help needed

Greetings Warriors

I'm a beginner (I've spent a great deal of time reading about IM, though I have not taken any real action towards it until now), and in the starting stages of researching the market for a niche that I'm planning to target. After having spent a few weeks crawling WF, I've started researching some keywords, along with my potential competitors currently dominating the top rankings of the niche, trying my hand on some basic reverse engineering in the form of having a look at what backlinks they have. I see that many of these sites have a good number of backlinks from other sites that have very little relevance (if at all) to the niche I'm targeting. Some of these sites have also been in existence for quite a long time. This leads me to the question of this post:

Isn't that a big no-no in the eyes of Google? Aren't these sites risking getting smacked by the Big G? What would in your opinion be a proper and cost/time effective method of link building without getting slapped by Google in the long run, yet at the same time not wasting too much time and money, and would you care to share the steps taken in how you tackle the matter? I see so many various opinions and/or preferred methods and solutions on this topic, and unfortunately lack the experience to tell which one's better from another, and more importantly which one is white hat and which one is black hat...

Any thoughts/tips/advice will greatly appreciated. My thanks for your time, looking forward to see your replies

    Black Hat SEO Techniques
    1. Hidden Content
    2. Meta Keyword Stuffing
    3. Meta Keywords
    4. Doorway or Gateway Pages
    5. Link Farming
    White Hat SEO Techniques
    1. Quality Content
    2. Use Structural (Semantic) Mark Up and Separate Content from Presentation
    3. Titles and Meta Data
    4. Keyword Research and Effective Keyword Use
    5. Quality Inbound Links

You should and must use white hat techniques. And to make money and get huge traffic you may link up do follow quality high page rank link.

Great thoughts on all this, Alex!

For long-term survival, I steer clear of any black hat techniques- the ones Quasha referred to above.

As Google refines its algorithm, it will either downgrade or ban sites that have gained lots of low-quality backlinks through automated methods.

Google is all about the user's experience, attempting to best respond to the user's search inquiry. Too often, sites that rank on the first SERP because of thousands of back links end up being low-quality sites- the kind Google does not want to see.

As I develop my information sites, I base everything first on- what can I provide that will help my reader. The second thing, how can I earn revenue without compromising value.

It is kind of like Aesop's fable about the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady does win the race.

        Hi Alex,

Search engines do not look at "site" relevance as a factor. Backlinks do not have to be from a "site" with a related topic to be relevant. All SEO factors are "page" level factors. A backlink from a "page" that includes a relevant topic within the content will be considered a relevant backlink by search engines.

To answer your question, create content that is both relevant and useful to search users based on your targeted keywords. SEO is about creating relevant and useful content that is easily identified as such. When creating backlinks you are still creating content, it's just content on another web page, follow the guidelines of useful relevant content that adds value to users.
