What do you use for keyword research?

Hey guys, I'm just wondering what's out there that's new and effective for keyword research?

Here's my current approach:
I typically do not use the Adwords tool directly alone as it is clearly a liar at times.

Market Samurai is nice but I get by just fine with the free version of Traffic Travis (even though MS has been known to be more precise).

I use Keyword Snatcher to fetch data from Google Suggest and get some really interesting results on longtail words.

I also use Keyword Kraken to gather data from relational compete.com keywords and weigh out popularity (not to mention gather some unexpected relevant words).

In addition, I of course check out the total number of competing sites for the exact match keyword and cherry pick words with weaker competition vs. high volume.
I haven't modified the strategy I use in a while and was wondering if you folks perhaps have some new tools that it would be fruitful to take advantage of.

Yeah its true that Keyword research tools are some what liars. For same keyword they show different statistics. But what should be the solution. We can't ignore them thoroughly.I like your strategy. Thanks for sharing.

It's kind to hear, that in answers are not only Google Keyword Tool. And now you can compare results, and make your own summary, can't you.

I find a good keyword with google adwords, then key it in and look at the backlinks of the sites on the first page, and second one too if the keyword is competitive.

Not anything more than that really...I don't do anything fancy. I'm not a total SEO devotee like some here, though.

I use both the free version of Wordtracker and the Google keyword tool. Yes, many times they give very different results, but I try to make sure they both are at least showing the keyword is searched for.

Market Samuri works well for me however, it appears you already use that. Are you not happy with it? It seems to have everything needed to get the job done.

According to latest versions of keyword research tools, i found Keyword Elite the best tool so far, a complete package you state, secondly, Market Samurai is in list as well, you can opt for this even too if felt not comfortable with Elite.

To be completely honest with you, I don't use one type of tool in fact, I utilize both paid and free tools or rather I use paid tools and then check them with my free methods. For my free methods, I basically use shopping sites' site maps like shopping.com to find "hot keywords". Then, I do an in depth competitive analysis using search engines. Next, I search for keywords (using only .com, .net or .org). Afterwards, I use Google adwords keyword research tool and then look for long tailed keywords. Then, I dig a little deeper to make sure that the keywords meet my precise specification and lastly I build my sites. I've been using this method for awhile now and it works very well.
