If its wordpress then you can change the settings to require people register first before commenting.. This will stop most spam
settings->discussion-> Users must be registered and logged in to comment ..check this

Yes, you are right this happens with wordpress sites if people forgets to make changes.

instead of allowing the comments you can turn off the comments

Turning off commenting to unregistered users will work, but that will put off some people from leaving a quick comment who don't want to go through the registration process. If you're using Wordpress just use the Akismet plugin so it will just group all your spam comments into one place. One of my old sites used to get about 20 spam comments a day, just comes with the territory as sites start to get more comments...

Or remove the comment template code completely from single.php and page.php files.

I changed the "Leave a Comment" text to "Tell Us What You Think" and I used a captcha plugin. This has virtually eliminated the spam I was getting.

Don't make users register - most of them won't. Instead use askimet (free). It cuts down on 100% of my spam!

If using Askimet on more than one site, cost is $50/m. There has to be a cheaper way. Can anyone suggest?

    10 a day? You're laughing!

I get 50-70 a day.. I just don't even pay attention to them. I briefly skim for legitimate comments, and usually they are easy to spot.

I get a good hundred spam comments a day on one of my sites... And dozens upon dozens on others from HTML forms...

So... WELCOME TO THE CLUB! :p

I've gotten to the point where I actually delete the line of code out of the post/page/comments.php that calls the comment form so I don't have to mess with anything...

I agree with those who suggested you to only allow registered members to leave comments to your article. In this way, you can stop them to leave spammy comments.

Why oh why would you want to block these comments? They're some of my favorite sources for backlinks. You can reverse engineer their comments and URL's and find a ton of places to comment yourself. You're not going to find a lot of high quality pages. But from time to time you'll run into one.

Obviously make sure you blog requires manual approval. But other than that, I say let 'em try to post.
