General Domain Name vs. Specific

Hey guys, I need some advice.....

I want to go into the Education Niche, I enjoy learning new things and I'd like to have a site on that. Now, is it more advantageous to have 1 site with multiple pages on various subjects to learn, or have multiple sites targeting those various subjects?

So, the general domain might be something like... learnonline.whatever (I know a bunch of these are taken already). Or, multiple sites that are specifically targeted like..... learn (how to play guitar)(how to record music).com, etc...

OR........ have a brand name as a domain that becomes associated with learning?

HELP! Any advice GREATLY appreciated. Ron

Really up to you. One domain would be easier to manage. There is plenty of domains that rank well for keywords that have nothing to do with the domain. Technically you can rank for pages or subdomains you create on your site. So learningplace.com/learnguitar, you could rank for "learn guitar" for that url on your site.

i also agree 1 domain is better which in turn save money compared to having multiple domains and renewing them every year.

  I would tend to agree. One domain is definitely easier to manage and less expensive for domain name registration / renewal purposes. I think I would go with a generic .com and / whatever like the example above.

  Thanks guys! I'm thinking an added bonus to going with 1 name would be that whatever traffic I drive to the site for a particular subject, they would see the various tabs up top and maybe visit those too.
  
  So, if a person came to learn guitar, they see the "learn how to record your songs" tab and go there as well. I appreciate the fast responses! Ron

It all depends on you if you want to focus on different niches but of course if you're not fussy about optimizing your website for 1 to 3 specific keywords. Well, just go ahead with it. If you are trying to optimize for the search engine, try not to cover too many niches as you won't rank well high enough. If you are creating an authority site it will take sometime until you get good ranking and traffic.

  A single domain is easy to manage and you may add specific niche pages to it
  
  But the main domain name should be generic...something like learnonline.com rather than learnguitaronline.com
  
  In the second case you are bound to have the inner pages in the guitar niche(or at least music niche)
  
  It would save you money which you might had spent on buying different domain names too
  
  Its always good to have a huge site covering various niches rather than having various sites built around small focused niches
  
  In the long run it adds strength to your site too

It depends on what search engine phrases you are wanting to target. I would try to get an exact match domain to your keywords you plan to target, if available, or try to register another keyphrase that has decent type in traffic.

i'd advice you go for one domain and have sections for the rest of subjects you want to take care of. then optimize each section according to it's subject. this way. you have all your traffic in one place and also people learning guitar might be interested in learning french as well on the same site. and optimizing each section according to it's subject as opposed to having different domains for each subject will save you time and money.

Come up with at least 1 general site on a big niche like education and then if you want to expand then go for specific niches...

I agree with most of what others have said here.

One site would be much easier to manage, cheaper in terms of domain registration/renewals - but also easier in terms of seo, multiple sites will take more work.

And also having one single site you will have all your traffic in one place and if you optimize the seo for each article individually then you should be able to draw in traffic from quite a number of different keywords.

  You're getting good advice here, Ron. Single niche, multiple product sites are just fine to go after. At some point in time, you might want to try a single niche, single product site or a multiple niche, multiple product site with a generic home/landing page. All approaches work.
  
  BTW, your numbers look OK, but you do want to go a little further and check competition. Total links, total and kind of anchor text links, and the page ranks of the links matter, too.

focus on one site first make it a success and then move to the next project.
These days it is all about authority and quality so if you have one big site this may be better for you if your products are related.
