The difference between choosing a .com, .org, or .net

I know a lot of people wonder about getting a .com or .net or some other extension. So just for the heck of it I went here and used the same keyword and kept all the criteria the same for each domain extension. This was done only for comparison purposes to find the differences in values for each extension. Here are the results of my experiment.

pooltable.com $20,000-31,000
pooltable.net $10,000-15,000
pool-table.com $10,000-15,000
pooltable.org $5,100-7,700

I found it interesting that this tool valued the hyphenated .com the same as the .net. and also valued it more than the .org.

Yeah I would disagree with that appraisal. I think that the hyphen .com is definitely worth less than the keyword .com - I think it is hard to depend on any of the automatic appraisal sites or services. Every domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

How can you possibly value a domain using something like that?
      That's more for entertainment purposes.

I am not valuing a domain so to speak. Just showing that a .com is valued more than any other but also the fact that a hyphenated .com carries more weight than a .org

        • It does look like fun I personally recommend all my clients register all variations to avoid being extorted, seems to be happening more and more.

It shows that it is valued less. Yes, this was only done for a comparison to just know what extension carries more value. If you were to sell 2 domains with the same keyword but different extensions, the domain with the dot.com will be worth more. I would not rely on this tool for a complete and accurate appraisal for your domains either.

i disagree with you. the - will be noted as a separator in the search engines and people are more likely to search for [pool table] than [pooltable] in which case the latter will rank lower i guess, hence the former being more expensive.

When I do a search for pool tables, I get

        #1 pooltablesusa
        #2 pool-tables-fast.com
        # 3 pooltables.com

Doing a search for pool table (no s, although google adds it) I get:

        #1 pool-tables-fast.com
        #2 pooltablesusa.com
        #3 amazon
        #4 pooltables.com

Question: Which "domain" is more valuable?

The days of speculating are over. What one does to a site,
        that's what makes it valuable.

I guess this blows the hyphen myth out of the water as well.

Interesting. I like the way you listed the appraisals for similar domains. .com is always better regardless, I'll never settle for another extension unless I own the .com.

I would take their valuation with a pinch of salt

The value of a domain is more affected by who wants it and for what purpose than if it is a xxxx.com or a xx-xx.org

I think it depends what you want to use the domains for.

If you want to sell them, then you need to take into account what people THINK they are worth.

If you want to use them, you need to take into account what they are really worth to the search-engines, to people trying to remember the URL etc.

Those two things might be rather different!

Certainly in terms of ranking, I've got very good rankings on .com .org and .net and didn't notice any significant difference between them.

if possible choose .com , it's easy to remember and widely used in internet

regarding hyphenated or not... I prefer hyphenated if non-hyphenated domain was taken. Why ?

Most people don't memorize your domain name when browsing, they "click" your domain, so that's not a big deal.

hyphenated domain still can rank well
