Keyword Domain Ranking Question?

Hi guys!

I have another question (no surprise there, haha)

I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine who claimed that it is entirely possible to rank just as high and just as well for: (example)

www.basket.com

and

www.basket.mystuff.com

I found out this is only possible if you of course do the proper seo, monetization and optimization of your site to outrank your competitors PLUS you cannot link either or to each other. In doing so, Google recognizes them both as their own seperate domain.

Is this true or are there some repercussions that I am unaware of?

Thanks for your time!

    www.woodendollhouses.com and www.woodendollhouses.keyword.com

(keyword being any word or any keyword or your company name, etc.)

Are you asking if it's just to as easy to rank with a sub-domain as a main domain?

haha, yeah I suppose I am - however I was told that if you do not link your main domain to the sub-domain and vice versa then google treats them both as their own domain. Thusly, would it not be just as easy to rank for cheappalmtrees.com as it would be for cheappamltrees.whatever.com??

im talking in terms of seo of course, I know that other factors are included to rank well besides your domain - however I'm asking, say everything is identical for both vintagecowboyboots.com and vintagecowboyboots.keyword.com (seo wise, site wise, everything wise) - the only difference was the slight variation to the domain name - which would rank better, or do they both have the same, equal chance? Are their any other outside factors in relation to google that does or does not allow this?

      Here's how I learned it:

If you want to rank for "keyword", keyword.com will do better than something.keyword.com, all other SEO ingredients being the same.

However, assuming you want to rank for "something", and "something" is related to "keyword", something.keyword.com will do better than keyword.com, but not as well as something.com.

Of course, domain is just one factor - everything else has to support the keyword too, and if it does then a few of the right links will easily make up for a less than optimum domain.

I don't think there's anything that would prevent both domain variations you mention ranking in the same search if they are both equally relevant. Is that part of your question?
