Is Just Page 1 of Google Really ENOUGH?

Hi Fellow Warriors,

I have created a couple sites all on page 1 of there specific Google search terms, yet traffic and sales are hard to come by - eg. for one specific search term there are 10,000 searches a month and I am no.5 on Google, how many of the 10,000 can I honestly expect to be clicking on my site?

I think you have to be either 1, 2 or 3 in all honesty - Any thoughts?

Also, anyone know a guaranteed service to rank your site in the top 3 of google? One that is marketing rubbish, possibly even allow payment once job complete?

Thank you in advance for reading and any contribution to this thread, it is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Raja R

Is that 10k broad or exact? I think the numbers are around 40% of searches click #1 spot, the rest much lower. You really should at least see a few clicks at no.5 and 10k exact searches, how many clicks are you getting with that site? have you checked Analytics?

      Hi Adlol,

lets say for simplicity sake it is 10,000 searches exact - How many do you expect no.5 on google to get of those clicks?

      I am receiving between 20-50 a day :-S

It would be great to have stats or studies of:
      1) search result 1: receives 50% hits, search result 2: receives 20% hits, etc...
      2) If google keyword tool says it receives 10,000 monthly searches, how many does it really receive?

      Regards,
      Raja R

If you're using Google keyword tool, it can be wrong sometimes ... by A LOT sometimes (sometimes not). So you may think there are 10,000 searches a month, but there may be a lot fewer than that.

Even if there were 10,000 searches, that's only about 333 a day. So, of course it helps to be higher in the SERPS. ... Of course. Especially if there aren't all that many searches a day. (Really depends on what your market is as to how many is "a lot.")

Other things such as your title and your description in the SERPS can help increase click through rates.

If you have 333 searches a day, and lets say you receive 40 .... 40/333 = 12%. ... That sounds about right.

Dude, you need to look at the exact search term... and i totally agree with Trivum Google keyword tool can be wrong sometimes... also around 42% of searches click #1 spot, the rest much lower.

If you want to push your sites higher trying joining a blog network I'm seeing excellent results with MAN (my article network) been using them for over 1 year now and most of my sites are holding the top 3 spots very strong... however this depends on the competition.

I find niche markets that have high "exact" search volume and low competition also on all my sites i have some kind of pre-sell story which is a must to increase your conversion.

It depends on the niche in my experience... some niches are more 'research' oriented and people won't necessarily settle for what comes up in the top 3 or even the first page, they'll continue digging deeper into the SERPs.

Other niches are exhibit the "shiny object syndrome", where a visitor will click on one of the top 3'ish results, never to come back to the SERPs.

I can speak to that because I have websites where let's say I rank on the 2nd page for a keyword which gets 5k exact searches a month, and I get more visitors through that second page than I do on another keyword which ranks #3-5 on the first page for the same amount of searches.

It just all depends and of course there are many exceptions to the above as well as exceptions to the exceptions.

      Hey Ian, what's up?

Do you try to keep that site on the second page? Or have you
ever pushed one of those up to the first page, and if so did it
      have a negative effect?

        Hey Ken! How's it going??

No, I don't purposely try to keep those sites on the second page, they just happen to be there until they get pushed further up...lol.

I will say this, I will usually prefer a top 3 spot on the second page rather than a bottom spot on the first page. In my experience, people don't seem to pay much attention to the bottom on the first page, but rather quickly click on to page 2 and then go to the first site or two on the top there right away.

Again these are not hardcore statistics but just some of the observations I've made over the years while ranking (or trying to rank) a multitude of different sites.

I have had sites where going from #11 to #10 had a negative effect on the traffic and sales until they either went back to #11 or went in to the top 3. Of course it's impossible to have such precise control over your rankings so I'll take what I can get.

  • It's not going to hurt you being ranked number 10 on the first page, but in reality, most of the traffic is sitting in the top 3. I'd say if you are looking to build a full time income from your site, you need to be there at least, but I have a few new sites hovering around number 10 and even some on page 2 of google and I still seem to be getting some quality traffic from it.

About ranking first page in google with traffic and conversions, it depends on what you monetize your site with.

If you're just using adsense, your articles doesn't need to be too detailed and it will get clicks as traffic is what matters.

If it's about a product, your articles needs to have a good pre-sell as it's about convincing the visitor to buy something.

    yeah..that's right,

Anyone recommend tips for how to get a website into the top 3?

It would be good if the tips were not based on it being a blog and having h1 tags, keyworkd sprinkling, etc...

So a site where there is just a landing page (Squeeze page)....

      Many thanks and kind regards,

Research those 4 websites listed above your website, check their PageRank, indexed pages number, backlinks' quantity and quality, etc. Compare then catch up in shortness.
BTW, since you get number 5 on first page, why not try CPA? It's much profitable.

i agree with him. you can apply this process too. if you are in no. 5 position then research on your top 4 sites.

You have to be in the top 3 to really start getting traffic, you will find tons and tons of seo companies that harp on being on the first page but it in most cases does not really get you much until you pop into the top 3.

If you are ranking on page 1 for multiple keywords for a site then yes. But Google is filling the searches with more and more local results, adwords and google shopping ads then ever before.

If you want your site to have a ton of traffic, you need to own the #1. No two ways around it. Even at #1, you'll be getting around 40% of the traffic but that's about as good as it gets.

Good luck in finding a vendor who'll work first and get paid later though. Would love to hire him as well if you can find him.

Page 1 for 1 keyword isn't allways enough. You need to have a broad exposure for related terms on page 1 and the higher the better. also it depends on the search volume and the type of product or industry.
