Question about chaning content and impact on rankings

So I started a new site a couple months ago, and admittedly the content is less than stellar. It's not PLR or spun, but it's very average in quality. Initially I was going to just set this site up as a little mini site and not worry about it a whole lot.

However... I think I want to make this a largish site, and the average content needs to go.

So my question... I have the homepage ranking on the 1st page for 2 of my 3 targeted keywords, and on page 3 for the keyword that gets the most searches.

If I change the content, will my ranking be impacted? The content will still be optimized, just higher quality.

I'm open to getting a new domain and redirecting the old one if that will make things easier.

Do you think it will have a negative impact to improve the content of a site? That's what you are asking, right?

I'm sure long term it wont, but in the short term will it? And when you put it that way... it's probably pretty obvious that it will be fine.

But I'm not sure Google will know the content is better. The content on the site is original and informative. I just want to take it in a different direction now. Hope that makes sense.
