I've got a list of sites I plan on making sometime in the next 6 months to a year. I don't have time to do them at the moment though.

I've heard google et. al. give some extra love as domains age. Would it be smart of me to buy the domain now, toss up word press and a post saying what the site will be eventually. Then ignore it (do no SEO at all). Then in 6 months when I'm ready to start working on it, I'll already have a 6 month+ old domain? Or is this pointless and I should just wait until I'm ready to do the work?

I figure a .com is only $12ish so even if it gives me just a small advantage it would be worth it.

This will theoretically give you a small advantage SEO-wise. If you're able to spend the extra $10 or so, I say it's a good idea. It also has the advantage that you will make sure that your preferred domain name doesn't get bought by someone else in the next 6 months.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking as well but just wanted to double check.

I'll hit up godaddy when I get home tonight!

      Thanks again.

In short, a domain that has been in existence for a longer period will tend to have a benefit in ranking.

However, a domain that has been in existence and indexed by Google for a longer period will certainly have a benefit in ranking.

If you are just buying a domain and leaving the host's advertising (love that GoDaddy thing!) as the main page may have no advantage.

Interpreted thusly: A domain that has been continuously indexed by Google over a time period is more likely to have substantial and\or relevant content and is also less likely to be a spam site.
