SEO, 301 Redirects, & Domain Age Help

Hello everyone,

So I have a question in regards to a new domain I purchased. I'm going to try to explain this as accurately as possible with as little bloat as possible.

I just purchased a domain, lets say "diyfireplace.com".

I already own "doityourselffireplace.com".

diyfireplace.com ranks better overall for keywords and traffic considerably, doityourselffireplace.com for keywords does not.

(I'm referring to keywords in the domain name itself)

diyfireplace.com, overtime would probably yield better SEO and SERP results, however, doityourselffireplace.com already has a PR3 and has been owned for a few years.

My question is, should I use diyfireplace.com as my new URL, with a permanent 301 redirect from doityourselffireplace.com? I realize I might take a hit but is there anything I can do to drastically reduce the negative hit I might take?

    Well, Google trusts older domain better than a newer domain. Unless diyfireplace.com is older than diyfireplace.com, otherwise I won't bother. Beside Google already takes into account "diy" equals to "do it yourself". Just do a query in Google, and you will see Google highlights both keywords in its search results.

    Better to keep old site and build new site and get some traffic and redirect new site to old site.

    I dont see a problem with this. I am currently working with a 12 year old site. We are taking the site and redirecting it to another aged domain that has no PR and really no backlinks.

    One thing you need to focu on is redirecting the each page to the same page on the new site. Dont go 301 the entire domain to the new domain. Take the time to make sure each page redirects to an equally helpful page. That way your anchor text translates to the relevant page.

    Also, if you 301 all your entire domain to the homepage, the home page will then start cannabolizing the keywords of the internal pages. You do not want multiple pages on a domain targeting the same keywords. This would happen if your anchor text all went to the home page.
