What is a link juice?

When you backlink a website and your backlinking results in google pushing you to a better position, it is referred to as "link juice". In other words, the backlinking gives you more power in google, aka link juice

This is going to be a basic attempt to answer your question and maybe someone that has a bit more time on the forum can give you a better example.

Basically when you build a link on any page including your own, that link will give a % of the overall page "trust value" This is sort like Page rank but it's not the same. The % depends on allot of stuff, like weather or not it's a no follow or do follow, how many links are on that page, the pages trust value and there is a couple of other things. But basically every link you build will give you some "link juice" and the more popular the link the more juice you get.

Firstly links are like votes, so for example if you had a celebrity links to you or votes for you saying your an excellent personal trainer then allot of other people will trust you because they trust them. Google works the same! If CCN on there home page with a PR 10 and a massive amount of trust value links to your site saying your a great personal trainer then Google will believe them and then trust you.

I will also attempt a basic explanation but perhaps a more simplistic one. as was mentioned there are so many factors involved in composing a page's value that it's too much to answer in a single post.

Simply put... each page has value... And people have created the analogy juice for measurement of that value. How much juice/value is passed to a page that is linked to... is where people start using the term link juice.

Let's say you have an orange with 100 ounces of juice in it. Put a straw into it and connect the other end to a cup. how much juice gets past to the cup is an algorithmic calculation. and that is what people are talking about most of the time when they refer to the term link juice.


many people are micromanaging link juice within their sites by using no follow or no index operators within hyperlinks to control the amount of link juice that is being passed in a particular link. The goal being to pass the most amount of link juice/link power to particular pages.

I do not personally practiced this because I built structures in a way that link just doesn't really matter to me. It is my opinion that link juice is not something to be very concerned with because it can't really be accurately measured and reflections and PR are basically the only thing you have to go on. And I think worrying about PR and link juice is basically a waste of time.

I'm not saying it's not beneficial.... But as far as I can see it's not beneficial compared to the amount of time it consumes to manage it. If you have a quality site and content... You'll be just fine.

You can get link juice from a variety of sources. Some of it can be generated yourself by submitting to social media sites like Digg, Reddit, and Buzz. The problem is that you have to get other people to recommend you from these pages so that your page profile starts to grow, and this is variable.

Link juice is the reputation of the website having your link is passing to your website. It is just like our social life. We get a good status in society if we have our links with high profile people in society. If the reputation and status of a website having your link is high than you will get higher link juice and if it is of negative repute it may cause a panelty from google which can decrease your page rank.
