OK warriors. Who knows how to fix this?

Our site CarCentral.com was starting to really kick ass (IMHO)! We were getting 100,000 uniques per month to our site until google slapped us with a duplicate title penalty back in Oct. of 2008. Our traffic dropped 90%. We fixed the dup title issue and our site has been slowly increasing in traffic again.

Question: How do we do SEO for a website that was bringing in traffic from 1000's of longtail keywords. I am very familiar with SEO but only when it comes to targeting particular keywords like 10 - 20 at a time but not 1000s.

Also, should we do more on-page SEO and if so how do we do it with 177,000 pages indexed in Google?

Any ideas would be great!

It depends on how much money you would want to invest... if you can do this yourself then great, you could save thousands, otherwise hire a firm. A site like that, if you're wanting to rank for so many things, then you need to be spending every hour working on that site.

Yeah, better on page could help, but I have a feeling it is going to take quite a bit of off page in order to make your website more of a link magnet.

Am I right to assume that your content is significantly decreased since the good ole days?

If so, I think it makes sense to attetmpt to replace all of that content. Simply having a larger site not only sets you up as an authority, but gives you those same long tails to target.

I also find that grouping my terms helps significantly. As an example, on my wine site I have an education section which allows me to write about growing regions, restaurants, hotels etc as well as the standard wine types, wineries, winemakers etc.

Read our most recent articles on wine, this month it's that unappreciated region called Napa Valley.

It seems like such a huge and expensive undertaking. My thought lately has been to concentrate on 1 section of my site at a time and start adding better content and building backlinks to those categories. This way I am only looking at 8-9 main sections first.

You will rank for the long tail phrases without trying as your site grows in authority.

You should only ever try and get one page ranking for one keyword. So its best to do your keyword research on each page, then optimize that page for that keyword then do a link building campaign for the page.

Obviously you cant do that for 170000 pages but you can do it for your say, top ten keywords by search volume.

    I hope that helps.
