Competition at #1 but showing no backlinks. 301 Redirect?

I've noticed a good few sites sitting at number one for some high traffic keywords, but they have no backlinks.

Would they, or their SEO service, have used 301 redirects to pass link juice to their main domain when backlinking?

Seems like a great way to stop marketers from reversing your backlinking efforts.

Yeah that's probably what they're doing, unless these are really low-competition keywords in which case they could rank well anyway. I wouldn't rely on only 301s to rank, but it can be a good way to cover your "shady" links..
