How similar is too similar?

Hi Folks,
Would anyone be able to give me some guidelines or point me towards some good guidelines regarding how similar or dissimilar pages must be in order to prevent penalisation in Google searches? I have a number of pages on my site and by necessity they have very similar content so I need to figure out how much to change them so my page doesn't look spammy.
I'd appreciate any help you could offer.
