In terms of monetization, which would be a better strategy?

Well... it depends. I would choose the latter. Think about it, if you will rank your website for multiple LTK, then you could make a lot of money from one website. Next you could sell this website on Flippa.

I think the better route is to build a larger site targeting multiple keywords. This would be what is called an authority site. It will take time to get it ranking for many keywords, but once it does, you will be getting traffic from words you never imagined.

Pick a theme for your website. For e.g. White Lamp Shades.

Now you can create the following pages:
        - reviewing all the different white lamp shades in the market
        - the different types of white lamp shades
        - what to look for in a white lamp shade
        - buying guide for a white lamp shade
        And so on.

This way you have a themed authority site.

Depends on what you mean by long tail. Personally I aim for at least 30 visitors/day to my sites. That may not sound much, but what can I say, I'm a fan of lean, mean niche sites Less than that, I'd build a bigger site with more keywords/pages.

Build a large site targeting multiple keywords. You'll build more of a brand image that way and attract additional direct traffic and repeat conversions.
