how powerful are aged domains?

I've always used brand new domains for my projects, but i just picked up a 12 year old domain from godaddy via the auctions. It was dropped, but didn't seem to expire. Yahoo is showing 600 backlinks for it and PR is N/a.

previous owner had 2000 indexed pages, (it was an autoblog). no pages are indexed now.

i reason i bought it is because i'm going into a more competitive niche than i usually go for and any extra juice will help.

what are you experiences with aged domains ?

An aged domain is only one small piece of the SEO puzzle. It may have an advantage over a competing website (all else being equal), but it won't make or break a campaign.

    I think they are great...
as long as they havent been deindexed.
i had that issue once, not good.
but they are great for rapid linking ive found.
if you are not going to build links like crazy i dont think age matters to much.
google can give an empty url pr though if it has some age.

Not too much of a difference. But it does help for "reputation" and Google might like it better (as supposedly to a similar site with the only changing factor being the domain age)

I wouldn't fuss around with age too much tho. It's one of the least worries for sites I think.

I have a few. Some worked out really well, and some I did not get any extra love for. But they all were in great markets that I rally understood. And that part was extra nice.

Id go for PR over DA even if its like a PR1 over an aged domain of 5 years or so. I have seen many aged domains with no PR get out ranked with relative ease.

Seems to make sense. I guess with an AD you could just blast away with the links.
