What are Quality Backlinks

I keep hearing that I need quality backlinks but I am not sure what a 'quality' backlink is - can anyone elaborate.

The backlinks I know about are:
blog commenting auto approve
blog commenting manually approved
profile links
other websites that actually link to my site

I assume that the manually approved blog commenting and other websites are quality.

Therefore could quality backlinks be regarded as those backlinks which are difficult to automate?

    Nope!...

The quality of a backlink is measured by hundreds of different aspects.

Here are a few example of GOOD quality links:

    -high PR backlinks
    -from aged domain
    -topic related
    -anchor text specific
-within content of an article or text
-near the top of a page
    -age of the backlink
    -age of the page
-how many backlinks the backlinking page has and their own relevance/quality
    -IP diversity
-type diversity (article marketing, blog commenting, social, etc)
    -ranking/traffic of backlinking pag

Those are just a FEW of the major factors that search engines look at to determine quality.

Stop focusing on "manually approved blog commenting" as high quality.... What Blog Is It?

Blog commenting can be good and bad quality.

Focus on a page by page basis and diversify your backlink sources and you'll be fine

Yes, but for example I have one site which is PR0 and ranks very well. Sometimes it is a good idea to get backlink from PR0 because it will be higher authority after PR update. Of course relevant content is king.

There are several points of a quality backlink:
    1) From a relevant page, better still, and a relevant site.
    2) High page Google PR, better still, and high site PR.
    3) Do-follow.
    4) The position of your backlink, whether it is placed on the real content, signature, advertisement, profile page etc. It is good if your backlink is placed in the real content.
    5) IP diversity.
    6) Anchor text is always good.

The list could go very long but for me above are the main one. Build your links as natural as they could be, build quality content or make a link bait, and don't over use automation tools like comment submission tool. If you need those service you can buy them are fiverr. Your money is better to be used on a more nature and white hat method.

Quality of link is judged by taking account of several factors and every factor have a different worth. The highest worth factor is relevancy. The link should be from the relevant web page this should be your highest priority while looking to make some quality backlinks. Than the anchor text of the link should be you targeted keyword. The quality of webpage where your link will be placed also matters. The page should be searched engine friendly and user friendly as well e.g. should be of high PR. The number of external links on the page should be very few so that your link can get the maximum link juice.

A quality backlink should meet the following criteria:

It must be a contextual link from a relevant authority site that does not contain many outbound links.

Your ultimate goal should be to obtain as many of these links as you can, but you should also aim to get lessor quality links otherwise your backlinking campaign will not appear natural - in google's eyes.

Quality backlinks come from High PR sites. High PR means that that particular site has everything that Google is looking for in a site. Asses the site before you post links on it. what is the PR? and quality of the site. Remember to use your anchor text as the link base.

      Thanks everyone...

The difficulty I find is that the top 3 websites in the niches I have tackled have 100's of backlinks and I struggle to think that I have to find 100's of quality backlinks to compete. I have read that if it was easy everybody would be doing it so I guess that is what sorts the wannabe's from the achievers...

Another quandry is that some other sites I have studied have 1000s of backlinks but the majority of the links are internal - some with 1000s of products all providing an internal link and it would seem the internal links do provide some link juice. Are internal links quality links in the eyes of big G?
