I've come accross a few comments on what order you should do different types of backlinking, and would like to find out more on this.

I understand that for best long-term backlinking results, the backlinks should look as natural as possible, so which types of backlinks would naturally occur, in which order?

I think what you saw was not stated clearly... or at a point in the middle of a discussion which caused you to misinterpret.

There is no real order to getting back links. And when people talk about looking natural and different types of back links they are ( or should be ) referring to link relevancy.

When people start worrying about links not looking natural they are typically doing large-scale link campaigns that are borderline black hat. For a link to be natural all it has to do is be relevant: meaning if your site is about cars... Get links from other car sites or related automotive type sites.

If your site gets links from women's fashion boutiques... That's unnatural and irrelevant. So don't just jump for any link you can... Wait for the ones that will help you. This is frustrating for many people because they feel like they are getting nowhere and so they start looking for any options at hand.

When people do that... That is when you need to be careful about getting links that may look unnatural because you are having to get links from sources that are not necessarily relevant... And do not naturally belong.

    hope that helps

Thanks for the reply. I agree that relevancy is vital, along with quality, and random timing spread out well over long periods of time (rather than thousands one day then nothing for months).

However, I most definitely have seen precise lists of the ORDER of backlink-types. For example one list might say to build social-bookmarks first, then do article, then only after those have both been going for a while, then do videos, because that's what real people would do in response to content they like. But I've seen more than one list and more than one order, and I want more data on this

This is the order I generally use:

    1. Directory submissions
    2. Social bookmarks
    3. Blog Commenting
    4. Article Submissions
    5. Web 2.0 Sites
    6. .Edu/Govs
    7. Video Campaigns

This should be a pretty good guide for you. Of course, grab any relevant link you can when you find it.

I like this list... I would only possibly elevate video campaigns as they can be very strong and really put a hard impression on the customer.

I would put video campaigns at possibly number one or two really because these other sources are getting spammed out by a lot of the automation software out there.

I prefer this sequence while working and It is beneficial for me till now.
You guys think highly of social bookmarking. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great for indexing purposes, but I don't see much use for it besides that.

I recently watched a video by one of the top seo "gurus" of today — he said if he could choose only one SEO strategy — and leave all the others behind — it would be links gained from article submissions, and named eZineArticles in particular (yes, this is post panda).

That's funny. I wonder if he was also heavily using blog networks, he'll be out for the count.

Article submission to high Page rank sites is effective because we insert 4 to 5 links in a article if the article is unique and interesting to read

    Hey their bro!

From my experience I have found that link diversity always wins. While incorperting your link diversity you want it to be natural as possible as you stated in the message above.

As far as which order what I do is organized randomness. This is i have a structure but I make the structure in a random way. What i did was buy a few WSO's from people who actually do SEO, examine their strategies and take bits and peices of their strategy and make them my own.

That way my link building strategy would be unique and not generic like the majority of the people.

    hope that helped!
