backlinks vs. homepage links

Most of my links are to my homepage, however, most of those are of low quality (no follow, a couple of small directories, ezines, etc.).

The ratio of index to backlinks are probably 7:1. I'm currently on page 1 of a low traffic keyword for both home page and a noncompetitive back page. Obviously I would like to boost a few other higher traffic keywords for my index page and 2 of my back pages.

Should I concentrate on backlinks or trying to get high ranks home page links?

That is the age old debate. Alot of Lower PR Backlinks vs Fewer but Higher PR Links. I've only been in this business for a year but it seems the consensus is that your veteran IM (internet marketer) guru's are going to tell you to focus on high pr backlinks even if you get one a week. Then the younger, more ambitious IM's are probably going to lead you down the path of getting all the backlinks you can.

If my opinion means anything, I would say make 1-2 forum accounts in your niche and post on them regularly for your "natural/legit" backlinks. Then every so often, go check out some high-rated gigs on fiverr.com. Whether it's social bookmarks or high PR backlinks in bulk, this should get you where you want to be and it shouldn't take forever.

You have to think about what natural link acquisition looks like, and then mimic that, if you want to rank at the top.

What would a natural link profile look like? It would have a variety of links, anchor texts, locations, right?

So that's what you want to do, build all different types of links from multiple locations.
