On page SEO is very important. Some of the main things:

Use your keyword(s)/phrases in your meta title and description, but also make it legible so people will click it on search results.
Use proper internal linking, use keywords in your pages and link to pages clearly, platforms like WP make this easy
Use keywords/phrases in your content. Make sure your content uses the terms you are trying to target, somewhere between 2-5% keyword density is pretty good.
Fresh content, try to post relevant niche related articles on a frequent basis. Even if your site is just a static landing page throw up a quick blog on the same domain and post articles often, make sure all blog pages link to your root page.

Write good quality, interesting and informative articles, which must be error free i.e. spelling, grammatical, etc. Then use proper meta information. Use right h1,h2,h3 properly. Then use site map and RSS feed.

Make sure you have a lot of content on each page if you can. Google is really going crazy busting down pages that have "slim content" since the Panda rollout. I would say 500 to 900 words per page (origional content).

On page SEO is basically structuring your site and so that it is search engine friendly and so that the search engines understand the relevancy of your content. If you do this well you will minimize the amount of off page SEO you need to do to get a good ranking

yeah I would go with this. keeping a site theme clear in your titles and anchor texts to those pages will give not only Google but surfers a clear picture of what your site is about.

Don't abuse titles. avoid titles with excessive words or repetitive keywords( it's just like spamming ). keep your internal link anchors focused on your keywords as well

Good quality content is the key. Only use the main KW once or twice. Once in the title & one more time somewhere in the body of the article. Inform the reader & Google will be good to you!!!

If you're lazy and can invest in something to help you out check out this software called SEOPressor.

    If not. Then Listen, Lol.
    1. Your Title, Pay attention to your title and your gonna want to have it reading from left to right and not centered.
Your title is what will show in the google search results.
    2. Meta Tags, for the keywords you'd like to rank in google for, Place a hyper link on them, and it's prefferd to have one of these keywords in the beginning of the article.
    3. Keyword density, for the keyword you wish to rank for, you're gonna want to have that keyword appearing as many times in the article as possible without it being obvious and unreadable.
If it's way too much, it's just gonna look spammy and you won't get the desired results.
    4. Heading; put your keyword in your heading 1 or 2 format in wordpress.
    5. Pictures, when you insert a picture in the post, it's best to go to "link to image" and place in the link of the post.

Hopes this is a bit helpful.
    Cheers.

First analyse the right keywords for your website & then try to write title, meta tags for your website. Then optimized the images & content with the targeted keywords...

Create XML sitemap for your website & submit your website in webmaster tools. This is all done in on-page optimization...the you can start off-page optimization for your website

Here's a short list of essentials:

Meta tags: Title (10 words, include main keyword)
Description (25 words, include main keyword at start and towards end)
Keywords (main keyword first, 4 to 8 variations)

html tags: <h1>one or two on page, include main keyword
<h2> one or two for each <h1>, include main keyword and variation
<h3> one or two for each <h2>, main and related keywords

images - wherever possible, include keyword in name of image, title attribute, alt attribute, and link

Text - use main keyword a few times in first 50 words of the page. Go for 1% + keyword density for main keyword. Add variations of keyword also. I find 4% density starts to sound like drivel and you'll wreck conversion, making ranking pointless (just my 2 cents worth - ymmv).

I use quite a few more on-page tactics to help my sites rank high, like linking techniques, different things you can include in your site that make your page more relevant for your keyword, and so on, but these essentials will get you a long way.

      Cheers,
      Rovi

To achieve a top ranking on Google for your chosen keyword(s), you must first learn how to optimize your webpage. This is the first, most important step to take towards landing on the first page of Google. Here is a checklist of things that you should always do to make sure that your page is fully optimized:
    • Domain Name: the keyword(s) that your are targeting should be in your url.
    • Home Title Tag: your main keyword should show up twice here, with a variation of that keyword (eg: lose weight and weight loss).
    • H1, H2, & H3 Tags: these tags are very important(especially <H1>), and should always contain your keyword.
    • Keyword Location Within Text: try to place each your keyword near the beginning of the first sentence of each paragraph (maintaining at least 100 words between paragraphs).
    • Keyword Density: you should aim for a density of 3% for each keyword that you're targeting.
    • Use Your Keywords as Anchor Text on your page: link to an internal page on your site, and then link to an authority site (eg: wikipedia) that is related to your keyword. Always remember to use the "No Follow" tag (rel="nofollow") when linking to an external site.
    • Images: use the "alt tag" and rename your images to your chosen keywords.
    • Decorate Your Keywords: bold, italicise, or underline your keyword at least one time.
    • Google Loves Unique Content: your post should be between 850-1000 words and be well structured around your main keywords.
