Real Number of AdSense/AdWords Advertisers?

When I checked SpyFu, it said that there was 1 advertiser for keyword xxx. When I did a standard search on Google, there were 11 advertisers on the first page. Which is the correct number?
For search results, does G go by keywords that the advertiser bids on, or does G treat search like adsense websites and display ads that G thinks that the searcher may be interested in?
I am trying to figure out the real number of advertisers for a given keyword.
