Best Page Width for CTR?

Only about 10% of Internet users still use 1024 screen widths - every one else has upgraded to wider monitors. But site designers still design around 1000 or 1024 width websites. Is this 1024 & under width better for Adsense CTR?

I've gone slighter wider to 1038 with a 2 column layout - 728 & 300 widths + padding. This lets me get both 728 & 300 size ads side by side and CTR averages 3-4%. It's a bit too wide for 1024 monitors but looks OK on wider screens. I'm not a fan of fluid 100% width designs - many look bad full screen on wide monitors & the ads wind up with more adjacent blank space.

Is there a reason sites aren't wider than 1024 fixed width? (not good for mobile devices?) . 1038 OK?
I get more clicks on the 728 text ads than the 300 text or image ads. I'm tempted to try a 728 page width with 3 x 728 ads - top, middle and bottom.
