on page optimization is anything contained or displayed on the domain such as page titles page content and URL structures etc..

Off page optimization really isn't that much optimization as it is campaigning. You do need to optimize your inbound link anchors when possible. In general off page optimization/campaigning is getting inbound links from outside sources( other domains ).

you need to do both because the off page factors such as inbound links get you noticed by Google. but when the people arrive on your domain it needs to match what they are looking for and that's where on page optimization comes into play as well.

One of the most critical factors in combining off page and on page optimization is matching site themes. For example if you have a domain about cars you want to get links from other domains that are also about cars. Ideally you want your keywords in the origin page of a link that leads to a title on your domain that also contains the keyword and if you get the keyword in the anchor is well that's dynamite in the pinnacle of joining off page optimization with on page optimization.

for example if your site is about "vintage Fords" with that keyword in your page title and you get a link from another domain that also has "vintage Fords" in its page title and then the link anchor from that page leading to your site also contains the words "vintage Fords" << it doesn't get any better than that. Just don't be to spammy throw in a few adjectives like "mint condition vintage Fords "

    On-page optimization:
You basically optimize the content and its structure. People tend to highlight certain keywords, tweak permalinks and so on.
    Off-page optimization:
All about backlinks, sitemap, pings submits.

On Page Optimisation is optimising your website in a way that it can rank better in search engines and improve visitor satisfaction. On-Page factors are related directly to the content and structure of the website.

      To put it simply:

On page opt mainly refers to using keywords in your content, title tag, etc.

Off page opt mainly refers to getting quality inbound links to your site.

On-page optimization = opetimzation on your page & backlinks from your site
Off-page optimization = backinks from other site

    Both are equally important

On page optimization is crucial for any successful website.Web Page optimization should precede any kind of off-page optimization or promotion.Your web site may have better ranking, but it may not bring in traffic if you are targeting wrong keywords or over optimizing your web site.

SEO is basically classified in two major processes that is On site and off site processes.

SEO of any site starts mainly with On site SEO that usually gives you a start for your project. First of all you need to get started with keyword research and analysis then go for meta tag creation that itself includes robot.txt creation. This robot.txt creation helps very much to disallows the spammers to crawl your site; like wise there are so many other On Site Seo techniques. Then starts your Off site SEO process that is mostly based on the Magic of Back links. These off site processes includes Forum posting, Article submission, press release submission etc.

On page optimization is a keyword placement and selection plays a vital role.More about keyword in on page:
our site’s content needs to be optimized in such a way that it can suit both search engines & your readers. Stuffing your site with too many keywords can make your site unreadable. So you will need to have some sort of balance between your keywords & your content. Important elements of Keyword Optimization:
    • Research: Do a proper research before you decide on your keywords. There are plenty of free tools out there that can help you to do keyword research. Some of my personal favorites are: SEObook Keyword Suggestion tool, Google Adwords Keyword Tool & Overture Keyword Tool.
    • Keyword Density: Try to have a moderate keyword density so that it can help the search engine to determine that your page is indeed related & relevant to the keyword that you are targeting.
    • Synonyms & Related Keywords: I personally like to use synonyms instead of having a high keyword density. This helps to make my content sound natural but still helps in SEO.
    • Long Tail Keywords: It’s often good to target some long tail keywords as they are comparatively easier to rank for. During your keyword research you should be able to gather some good long tail keywords that you can optimize your site for. But you can also come up with your own long tail keywords; for example try adding some common words like – ‘best’, ‘free’, ‘cheap’, ‘top’ etc. along with your actual keyword and you might eventually get some good long tail keywords.

Onpage optimization is to make your webpage SEO friendly and easily understandable by the Search Engine bots. Page title, different meta tag descriptions, keyword using, interlinking the pages of your domain, webpage contents according to the theme and title of the page, your website navigation structure in sitemap and robots.txt etc are the most important in on-page SEO.

In Off-page SEO you get links to your pages from external, relevant and High PR webpages of good repute. These links can be from Forums, blogs, social networks, article directories, directory submissions etc.
