Are link pyramids REALLY more cost-effective?

As the title says, are all those fancy link pyramids and link wheels really more effective than using the same amount of time and money to build links directly to the money site (not spamming of course)?

I've been hearing from some reputable IMers that people give way too much credit to these incredibly complicated link building schemes and that it would actually be more effective just to build links directly. One even mentioned that Matt Cutts actually said something like, and I'm just paraphrasing here, that he found these type of linking techniques to be quite ridiculous and that Google is often aware of these types of ploys.

I personally find it hard to believe that Google would be able to analyze the links so in-depth and it makes me a little suspicous of his intentions for making a statement like that.

So does anyone have semi-conclusive evidence that link wheels and link pyramids are, in fact, more cost-effective than good ole' links straight to the money site?

I had the same skepticism until a bout two years ago when I figured i'd give linkwheeling a shot. I continue to increase my revenue from the very complicated structuring and backlinking I used, so I can say with confidence it does work. Is it a lot of work? Well, depends what you consider work but yes, there is a lot of initial investment in time. Also, my sites, several of which were sitting on page one or two of Google, wallowing under autoblogs and crap content sites shot up the ranks when Panda slapped. I had done nothing to any of the sites, the only common denominator was Panda.

      Thanks for sharing, bnwebm.

Well, I'm sure that they work to some extent, just not sure if it's worth the additional time and money for all the "link to link" stuff as compared to spending that time and money doing direct linking.

Do you create your own linkwheels? Care to give a quick overview of how you do it?

I completely understand your hesitation as it is a lot of initial effort. Direct linking, and some on here will certainly have a different opinion, appears to be going by the wayside with Google. This could be why my sites moved up and weren't slapped by Panda, but only Google will ever know.

I do create linkwheels, based on a two year old crumpled piece of printer paper that I still have and still use. The explanation behind it is extensive and is on my blog if you want the low-down. Quick overview is that you have nine hub sites (Squidoo, Blogger, etc.) but only three in that first tier link back to your money site. The other 6 interlink. Then you create articles on several different article sites like ArticlesBase, EZine, etc.. These interlink back to the hub sites and not back to the main site. After that, its all backlinking and bookmarking, again NOT to the main site. Feel free to PM me if you need help!

Checked out your article on linkwheels although it seemed that your method is more of a link pyramid or perhaps I'm not understanding it correctly. Do you have a diagram as describing complex link building schemes with words can be pretty confusing, at least for me.

Btw, do you use any software to semi-automate the process?

          Thanks

Yeah it certainly works! When Google looks at link structure it doesn't want to see just a shallow structure, it looks for how deep it is. The deeper the better in my opinion!!
