Keyword volume versus competition

Hi, I have a few hobby sites that I need to rework the keyword focus on and I hope some of you Warriors can advise.
I put together a few sites just as a hobby to try and learn a bit about the web and HTML etc, but the traffic levels are not good. On one site that's a year old, I still only get a handful of visitors a day despite it having well written 100% unique content. I feel that the problem could be keyword focus as I didn't keyword research the sites when I started - it was more about learning how to do the mechanics of getting a site up rather than the marketing at that time (playing with CSS etc to understand how it works).
I'm using the Google adwords keyword tool but have confused myself. Should I be targeting high search volume keywords with low levels of competition (there doesn't seem to many) in the hope that I can snag a small percentage of the high volume, or should I be chasing the #1 slot for lower volume search terms, also with low competition.
I'm fairly happy that I should keep away from high competition terms and keywords, as the chances of getting onto page 1 of a SERP is small.

What do you think?

If you can't find keywords with both high volume and low competition, you're probably in a tough niche.

So try creating a few pages dedicated to each strategy: Make some pages using low competition keywords and a few with high volume keywords.

However, your low competition keywords still need "some" traffic volume to have any value at all.

You don't need to completely go the "low-competition" route all the time, especially in bigger niches. Remember, healthy competition might actually backlink you or allow you to guest blog from time to time. You just gotta broaden your horizons and reach out!

Thanks guys. It did occur to me that where a phrase has a high search volume, there's a bigger absolute amount of visitors available if you can snag just a small percentage. I'll look at a mix of approaches as you've both suggested.

There does seem to be a lot of very confusing advice out there though and I'm finding wading through it all quite hard.

    Onwards and upwards!
