Hi

I'm getting really confused.

I have a wordpress site smsfguide.wordpress.com currently ranking at number 3 under the keyword "SMSF" in google.com.au

I tried to use the 301 redirect to site smsfguide.net, after about a month, my wordpress blog rank >300 and my site rank ~100. I have built extra 150 backlinks in my smsfguide.net, why did it rank even lower?

Now that I decided to cancel the 301 redirect and my wordpress blog jump all the way back to position 3. What should I do?

thanks

Well, for one thing, the wordpress.com blog is not redirecting for me. And, sure enough, it's not redirecting for Google either because the "you will be redirected" page is cached and only 5 days ago.

So, first thing to do is make sure that the redirect works. The second thing to do is to make sure it's a real 301 redirect. Otherwise, it's like you're starting a new site at your other domain.

    Thanks for your reply
I have just cancelled the 301 redirect because after a month there was no improvement. Not even so, both my site and my wordpress blog dropped to >100 position. I just doubt the 301 redirect is of any help. So I decided to cancel it and now my blog jump back to position 3 in google.

Is there any other way to resolve this problem?

    Thanks

Oh, so the 301 wasn't implemented when I was looking?

301-redirects are recommended when moving a site. Are you sure that yours was a 301 (none other would do)?

Also, even if it was a 301 redirect, there is no guarantee that Google will correctly attribute everything to the new site. At best, you would experience erratic rankings while Google reindexes your site and harmonizes across all its datacenters. At worst, your rankings will tank and never recover. The latter doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

The best advise is: do not move your site. If you must move your site, your only option is 301, or you will be starting from scratch.

Sorry that I cannot give you a more cheerful answer.

    Thanks for your advice

I guess I may just leave it and work on next project, have wasted enough time on this and still doesn't see any results.

Good lesson though, shouldn't have used wordpress blog at the start.
