When you guys are checking keyword competition do you run a broad search on google for your term IE term goes here or do you run a "term goes here" search. For example, I have a site that ranks #36 for "term goes here" but no where to be found on term goes here. with quotes there are shortly under 200k sites listed, 34 million without quotes.

*EDIT* I'm not talking about the keyword tool listing either. Just deciding how many people you gotta nut up or shut up against

I run exact match all the time. And I found that if for example exact match in Google keyword tool show 8000 searches I get around 500-1000 clicks only being in the first place.

  • You should run both. And you should also look at the anchor text of your competitors to see if they are optimizing for the phrase. You should also look at the first page results for those keywords. You should look to see how many ads google displays to see how many advertisers there are, and how many of those are relevant and active within the niche not just looking to spend 5cents. Whether you are doing adsense or not, adsense/adwords will tell you a lot about the niche.

Keyword tools are seldom spot on. Searching with quotes helps you figure out if the market it big enough, searching global helps you figure out how broad the keyword spectrum is.

It's a balancing act, you build a feel for what do do and how to do it with time and experience.
