I think it means nothing. It's just the same with blog.domain.com or forum.domain.com or www.domain.com

They are just different servers/databases. Some of the larger sites (such as Google) will have them, where one database will be in the process of being updated, etc, and then the updated results will move over to the main database.

For the most part, us 'regular' people don't have to worry about that stuff.

It's used like a sub domain to mirror a site, & help reduce server load.

Its used for extremely large sites with a ton of traffic. One poster is right, it is just a mirror. The reason they have it is basically for updates, maintenance, and just in case something happens. Imagine if google was down for 20 minutes just making an update. Not good right? Lets say one of the servers were down and they needed to replace a part... an hour is too long for a major site to be down. So they use the mirrors, www2, www3, www1.

Both Ian Varnava and yukon are correct.

Currently our company is using www3 to switch from an old system to a newer one. It keeps the transition running smooth (from the companies side) so users don't notice any changes.
