    Just depends on whether the links get indexed by Google also self made links like profile and forum links google see's a low quality

    But the PR of the domains are high. And totally white hat. So why they are called low qualities?

    I'm a SEO guy and have a huge cluster of sites where i use one form of backlinking to each to determine which kinds of backlinks pass juice and which kind doesn't work anymore. I track those rankings regularly to see if i need to tweak my formula accordingly.

    I can tell you that although profile backlinks are not my favourite form of backlinking, there are no questions that profiles are still effective. You just need flair in finding profiles that have a high stick rate (does not get deleted by forum owner), and then drip feed the links. Afterwards you need to backlink to each of your profile link, either through social bookmarking or turn them into rss feeds and ping them for sure crawling. Still works very well.

    They work if you want to create link diversity, but if you're looking rank only with profile links, then forget about it, they won't!

    It will work in my opinion but the profile must be actively doing the activities in a forum. Domains with high PR, with quality backlinks and contents will be very effective in linkbuilding.

      Panda update... PR of the domain doesn't mean the PR of the link is high. It is still manipulating the search engine unnaturally, don't you think? You obviously aren't doing it for marketing reasons since no traffic comes from them, not necessarily white hat, but not black hat either...Low quality, definitely. UNLESS!!! You use them in a link pyramid, then they are somewhat useful, even then don't put all your hope in it.

      You're exactly right, it is great to have link diversity.

      Its quite possible that as your site is aging, your rank is increasing. If you're using only profile links, then you should rethink your SEO plan.

      Yawn...

      Do you really... honestly believe the PR on the home page really matters with a profile link? The fact that you're hung up on PR is a big enough giveaway, but the fact that you don't understand the panda update is bigger.

      Of course anyone selling a cheap link building service is going to tell you profile links are the greatest. Even the most respected SEO guys that use profiles for backlinking, use it for linking to other properties in a link push.
