Determining achievable keywords

What's your process for determining which keywords to use in an SEO campaign? Obviously there are some keywords that are simply too competitive to tackle. I've used the google keyword tool a little to try and help determine which keywords are achievable, but the tiny little green bar under "competition" just doesn't seem accurate.

Most of you will probably say that anything is achievable with the right amount of money behind it. While this may be true in some cases, most of us don't have client's willing to spend infinite amounts of money on SEO. Essentially, if I pick the wrong keywords I could end up doing a lot of work for nothing. So my question is, how do you determine which keywords for your campaign are actually achievable?

Theres too many factors. You just need to practice to get a good understanding.

Is your clients site a exact match domain?
    Does it have PR?
    Does it have age?
How much content does it have?
Is any of the content duplicate?
How many visitors a day do you want to receive from each keyword? (If its a local keyword it will be less searched than if it is a regular keyword.)
How many backlinks does your client have?
How many have keyword anchor text?
How well is optimized is the content on the site?
How old, what PR, how many backlinks, what type of backlinks do the top ten listings in google have for the keyword.

These are just a few questions you have to be able to answer relatively quickly if you have lot of keywords to choose from.

This reply may not give much value but I use software to let me know which keywords I can easily rank for. I then just place my link and keywords into the link building services I'm subscribed to and start seeing my rankings go up after a few weeks/months.

BTW, don't rely on Google Keyword Tool competition, that's only for Pay Per Click.

Do a search for the keyword you want to rank for and you'll see the real competition you're up against. I use SEOQuake plugin for Firefox, but there's plenty others out there.

    Market Samurai is awesome too

    Hi....

One of the best ways to know if you have a chance of ranking high for a particular keyword phrase is to check the first page competition on Google for that keyword phrase.

Now, you'll need a tool like Market Samurai to get the details you need (ie. Page Rank, number of page backlinks, etc) but it will quickly let you know what your true competition is.

If you see numbers like Page Rank 0, less than 10 backlinks, etc, you know you have a shot.

Also, another indicator for me is when I see web2.0 sites and articles on page 1 of Google. These usually have very little backlinks and are easier to outrank (if you know a few a basic SEO techniques).

    Best wishes,

1.) Traffic Levels - Does it bring in enough traffic to make it worth it?
2.) OCI - Will people likely buy from my site when coming in through these terms?
3.) CPC (adsense only, unless you use adwords to drive traffic) - is it high enough? >$2
4.) Competition - who's ranking for these terms, what kinds of sites are they, what are they known for. You can rank for anything, I usually don't worry too much. Unless it's some term like "watch tv online" where the first page is flooded with authority sites with 500k links to them and high pr.

For me, 4 things must be concerned before choosing a keyword:
    1. Is that keyword profitable?
    2. How can I make money with the keyword? Adsense? CPA? CPS?...
    3. How competitive the keyword is?
    4. Do I have resources for content building?
